Titre Sém LaBRI. Formal language theory inspired by natural language
Résumé Until the mid1980s, fruitful interactions between formal
language theory and linguistics had been limited to the study of
contextfree grammars during a brief period in the late 50s and
the early 60s. About 20 years ago, multiple contextfree grammar
was introduced to overcome the difficulty of contextfree
grammars to describe some natural language constructions. The
formalism of multiple contextfree grammar is just as elegant and
natural as that of contextfree grammar, and calls for thorough
mathematical investigations. I sketch some recent developments
and open problems in the theory of multiple contextfree
grammars.
